boston/fenway red-tailed hawks nest

I was in Boston for a few hours and decided to check out The Fens where I’d heard red-tailed hawks were common. And it didn’t take long to find them… while walking thru Fenway Victory Gardens, a hawk flew overhead with a twig in its talons and I saw it land in a tree just above my head… I was standing right under their nest!

The nest looks pretty small, so I guess they’ve just started building it… I watched them use their beaks to break twigs off of nearby branches and fly them over to the construction. It was awesome to see them using their brains creatively.

I was also really happy to get sharp images of a pair of cardinals in the gardens… and a cute lil downy woodpecker posed for me too.
