clash of the titans: falcon vs hawk over providence

Yesterday at 3pm this Cooper’s Hawk landed across the street from my window, so I grabbed my camera and snapped a few pictures. You can identify it as a Cooper’s by the thick banded tail.

Then today at 10am as I was reviewing my pictures, the hawk flew passed my window again and landed on city hall… he headed toward the pigeons in burnside park and that caught the attention of our local Peregrine Falcons who must have been perched up on the bank tower. They teamed up to chase the hawk away from their territory and I got a few blurry pictures… they move fast! Yep, I took these from my window, didn’t even have to leave home.

Wow that’s amazing… You must live right smack in the middle of the peregrine’s neighborhood. I’m sooooo jealouse :)

Awesome action shots!!! I’m ALWAYS watching the birds of prey (BOP’s as I like to call ’em) around town. There are a couple I see often by the 6/10 connector you might want to check out.

These photos are outstanding as is all of your work. You are a magician with a camera and get some of the most fascinating shots. You just seem to be in the right place at the right time! That is a true gift and now you give this back to the community to view all that we’ve missed while at work. Thank you so much.
An avid bird fan and fan or yours!

Hey Peter, great to hear from you! As always, your pics are amazing. I’m moving to the Sleep Lab in East Providence for a new job (still Lifespan, thank goodness) and discovered that there is an osprey nest quite near the lab on a cell tower. So I’ll be checking that out in the spring, but as always, will be checking on the red-tails Liz and Dick too in the spring at RIH. I’ve been seeing both of them hanging out in their “territory” at the RIH campus almost every day, so I’m excited to see what new babies will appear in April.

That hawk with the leather straps is quite a find! Have you seen him/her lately? Hope he/she is doing OK. Love those birds!

Keep up the gorgeous work. Hope you and all you love are doing well.

    Love your work!

    Deb,
I read your comment about the red-tail with the leather straps. My boyfriend and I see him often. We last saw him Saturday on 95 near Branch Ave.! Looks like he/she is doing well :)
